How to Succeed in Your Online Courses

Online courses offer you great flexibility, allowing you the opportunity to get career training without traveling to class every day. But to truly succeed in them, you need to have a plan, some good organizational skills and the ability to follow-through. Here are 7 tips to help you succeed in your online courses:

Student at Computer OnlineGet internet ready. Before you can begin an online course, you need to make sure you can get online –every time. If you have spotty internet service, then you’ll need to make a plan to get online from public libraries or coffee shops that provide free internet access.

Follow the course syllabus. Read through your course syllabus so you know exactly what will be expected of you. Take special note of your instructor’s contact information, text book requirements, assignments and due dates.

Get organized. Transfer all important due dates to a day planner or electronic calendar. If you need to post to an online forum every Tuesday, make certain that you have a reminder to do so. Consider setting alarms on your phone so you never miss a due date.

Set aside sufficient time for your course. Even if you’re not in class, it sometimes helps to pretend that you are! Set aside several hours every week to dedicate to your online course and stick to a schedule. Maybe you could work from 7 to 9 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The trick is to find a schedule that works for you and your life.

Be proactive. Many online courses give you plenty of opportunity to interact with your fellow classmates and your instructors. Make sure you take advantage of them! And if you have questions about an assignment or content, contact your instructor right away. You don’t want to miss a chance to learn and you don’t want to fall behind.

Let your family know you’re at school –online. It’s really important that the people in your life understand that you take your education seriously. When you’re doing coursework, you need to be able to work without interruption. Your family’s support and encouragement can have a great impact on your success.

Do the work. Whether you’re meeting on campus or online, it’s pretty easy to procrastinate. Don’t! If you want to succeed in your online class, you need to do all the work, including readings and assignments, and do them all on time.
