Building a Successful Career: How to Start

Puzzle PiecesIf you want a successful career, you’ve got to make a plan and follow through. It will take training, time and some passion to reach your goal. Here’s how to start:

Self-assess. Before you can build a career, you need to choose a career. Take some time to think about what you like and what you’re good at. Are you tech savvy and curious? Maybe a career in information technology would be right for you. Maybe you’re more suited for a career in business. Or do you want to dedicate your life to helping others and work in healthcare? Investigate whatever interests you and then…

Set a goal. Where do you want to be in a year? In five? Set a goal that’s realistic and attainable. For example, if you’ve decided you want to work in healthcare, explore your options. Maybe you’d like to work in a medical office. Conduct some research and set a goal to become the professional you want to be. Then make a plan, set a deadline, and …

Get career training. You can’t be successful in your career until you have the skills and training you’ll need to perform the tasks of your job. Select a program that will provide you with the classroom training, personal attention and hands-on experience that will really prepare you for your career. Does it offer extensive preparation for the certifications in your field? It should. Can it be completed in a timeframe that fits with your goal of beginning your new career? Explore all that the program offers and whether it’s right for you. Then, once you have the training, you’ll need to…

Get Experience. Even before you land that first job, there are ways to get experience and make yourself more marketable. Externship programs give you the opportunity to use what you’ve learned in your career training program in a real world environment. You can also gain knowledge and experience by volunteering or working as an intern in the industry you hope to work.  Another reason to spend as much time as you can in the field of your future is so you can…

Network. One of the most important skills you’ll need to master if you want real success in your new career is networking. Everyone you meet in your profession can be a teacher, friend, mentor and connection to something new. Begin to build your career network now and watch it grow.
