Career Quest Expands Paralegal Studies & Legal Secretary Programs

The legal program at Career Quest Learning Center (CQLC) has been so successful that administrators have added an additional session at the Lansing campus.  The Paralegal and Legal Secretary programs are designed to prepare students for careers as paralegals, law clerks, legal analysts, legal assistants, and paralegal specialists. The new session will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

“I don’t think there’s anybody more valuable to a law firm than a good paralegal. They keep us in check,” said William C. Amadeo, Esquire, a Lansing attorney who has been involved with establishing the CQLC program. “Lawyers can’t fight for the best for their clients without a strong paralegal or legal secretary at their side.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 17 percent from 2012 to 2022, faster than the average for all occupations. They say that this growth projection is due to law firms increasing efficiency of legal services and lowering expenses by hiring more paralegals and legal assistants.

“We’ve been watching labor statistics and trends and know that this is a burgeoning field, full of opportunity for potential students,” said Career Quest Learning Centers President/CEO Robert McCart. “Law firms are great employers of paralegals, but we’re also seeing large corporations increasing their in-house legal departments by hiring more paralegals and legal assistants.”

The 15-month Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies degree program and the 8-month Legal Secretary program are offered in a blended format, which combines face-to-face training with industry professionals on campus, along with flexible online learning.

Students who participate in the Paralegal Studies degree program will learn:

·       Family law, contracts, business law, and criminal law

·       Office computer programs

·       Written and oral communication skills

Students who participate in Legal Secretary diploma program will learn:

·       Family law, business law, dispute resolution, contracts, evidence and torts

·       Office computer programs

·       Mathematical and orderly reasoning

·       Written and oral communication skills

Students in both programs will also complete a required externship course to apply the skills learned in a real-world, on-the-job business environment.
