Career Quest Learning Centers offers their students concentrated career training programs in healthcare, information technology and business, and a whole lot more! Through the school’s Life Plan Support Services, students are given unique assistance outside of the classroom so they can succeed inside.
The program directs students to services they may need such as childcare, housing, and food assistance. According to Student Services Coordinator Stephanie Stephenson, Life Plan has been enormously helpful in taking some of the outside stresses away so students can concentrate on their education.
“We’re here to believe in them,” said Stephanie. “Many of our students don’t have anyone watching over them at home. We try to do some of that by providing them with as many resources as we can so they can be successful.”
Stephanie says she introduces herself and all the services available to Career Quest Learning Centers students at orientation.
“I try to be among the first faces they see when they arrive on campus,” said Stephanie.
Much of what Stephanie does is listen.
“They explain what their problem might be and I guide them to the resources that might be available to them,” said Stephanie. “Sometimes it’s just helping them learn the local bus routes so they can make it to their classes.”
Stephanie says that other times it’s a bit more complicated. She has helped students find homeless shelters and shown them how to access the Department of Human Services for social services like fuel assistance and food stamps. They even have a carpool club where students can share a ride and Career Quest gives the driver a gas gift card.
“It’s great because the students hold each other accountable. They make sure everyone gets to class,” said Stephanie.
According to Stephanie, Life Plan isn’t just about what’s happening during a student’s time in their program; it’s also about what happens next. When it comes time to find a job in their new career, Stephanie works closely with students and Career Services. When students are ready to go out on interviews, she can give them a pep talk or tell them where to find discounted clothing that will give them a professional polish.
And once they land that job, Stephanie says many of her students share the good news.
“It’s really nice to see them succeed,” said Stephanie. “We have a unique group of students who are really capable. They just need someone to believe in them. And we do.”
