If you’re looking for new employment opportunities in the New Year, things are looking up! According to recently released projections from University of Michigan economists, the State’s economy is looking better than it has in years. And they expect the trend to continue.*
The state lost more than 800,000 jobs from 2000 to 2009, representing a greater than 17 percent decline in employment.** But in recent years, the state has begun to add jobs and the unemployment rate is going down. The unemployment rate was at 8.8 percent in 2013 and was expected to settle at 7.4 percent at the close of 2014. Even better, the University of Michigan economists predict unemployment rates of 6.8 and 6.4 percent for 2015 and 2016, respectively.* Those percentages translate to more than 130,000 jobs! If the State’s economy stays on track, the number of employed workers could climb to 4.3 million by the end of 2016.
Among the industries that are expected to be particularly strong are the automotive industry, healthcare, and information technology. And, according to a study by the Workforce Alliance, almost half of the jobs that will become available by 2016 will be for “middle-skill” jobs –those that require more than a high school diploma, but less than a four-year degree.** In fact, the report says that Michigan will “experience shortages of the middle-skill workers critical to economic recovery and long-term success.” Demand for middle-skill jobs is up! Are you ready to get to work?
