Career Quest: Breaking Down Roadblocks to Success

Heather Green Career Quest Learning Centers

Heather Green had been working in Billing & Coding for 14 years, but every time she went to advance her career, she hit a roadblock. She didn’t have the formal education or certification to prove that she could do the job.

That’s when she decided to enroll at the Lansing campus of Career Quest Learning Centers. Although she was nervous about going back to school after a long time away from academics, she was also determined.

“I was a little scared going into it, but they made it so easy to get started,” says Heather, “and everyone was so supportive. The instructors and staff are phenomenal. They would answer all our questions and give us pep talks to get us ready for every test.”

Heather says that she was familiar with much of the terminology, but there was also much she didn’t know. For example, at first she wasn’t so sure about the anatomy and physiology class, but it soon made sense that understanding those basics would help her do her job better.

“The instructors guide you to what they think you may need to know for certification,” says Heather, “and it works.”

Passing along the success strategies that worked for her Heather says if you’re thinking about starting the program, you need to think positively.

“The word can’t should not be in your vocabulary while you’re in school,” says Heather. “You need to do what the instructors say, never be late on assignments, and block out any distractions you may have. And never give up!”

That can-do attitude didn’t just help Heather succeed in school; it helped her land a great job with the Accident Fund Insurance Company of America. In addition to receiving better pay, after her 90-day review Heather will be eligible for benefits and vacation pay. But what Heather is really looking forward to is the variety. She says she won’t be “doing the same thing day after day after day.” Instead, she’ll have a range of tasks and responsibilities, from interacting with patients and insurance companies to doing coding, posting payments, filing collection reports, handling denials, and conducting appeals. She started her new job last week and can’t wait to see where it leads.
