Career Quest: Always Building Community

Career Quest Learning Centers Events

Last month’s Spring Fling was a huge success with more than 150 people participating in the festivities at our Lansing campus. Staff and students of Career Quest Learning Centers were joined by family, friends, and members of the community for a celebration of the season.

In a nod to Easter, there was an Easter egg hunt and a bunny hop. The big guy himself was even available for Easter Bunny photos. There were stations for coloring and crafts, and lots of treats to have and take home. But a big part of the celebration was allowing the kids to see just where their parents go and what they do. An IT instructor taught a few lessons about computers, while our Medical Assistant students helped out with human body puzzles, making sure all the organs found their appropriate homes. There was a great mix of students, children, and community.

“We often open our doors to the community,” says Student Success Coordinator Robert Moyer, “but these events are also about allowing our students to show off what they do here to their families.”

As a Student Success Coordinator, Robert says that he’s especially aware that many of his students may have overcome significant obstacles to even enter their programs. He says he loves his job because he gets to see students through adversity to their individual success stories.

“I help students with any roadblocks they might encounter,” says Robert.

Robert says students often need just a little help to do well in their programs. They might get stuck with a transportation issue or a childcare glitch. While Robert isn’t heading over to play babysitter or chauffeur, he can put students in touch with area resources. The goal is to give the assistance they need to stay in the program, go out and find the career they trained for, and maybe even give back to the community they love.

“I was very computer illiterate until I came here. By the end of the first week of my externship, I had letters of recommendation waiting for me."

“When the Career Quest interns come to my office, they are very well prepared clinically for the technical work that we want them to do."
