Jenny Shumaker has only been a business instructor at Career Quest Learning Centers for a little more than a year, but she’s already a big hit with her students. That’s probably because she happens to think those students are pretty awesome!
“They’re great,” says Jenny. “There are so many of them who are just hungry for a change. They’ve faced some obstacles in their lives. Now they need someone to show them what’s possible and help them build some confidence.”
Jenny says there’s no magic formula to her teaching style, but she does try to “make a connection with the students as quickly as possible.”
“There’s an age-old quote, simple but it’s true,” says Jenny. “’No one cares how much you know until they know how much you care." I try to let my students know I care. I tell them 'I’m proud of you. You can do this.' Our students need to believe we believe in them. They’re willing to push if they know someone is in their corner.”
Once they know she cares, Jenny shows her students all she knows and all she can teach them. Jenny earned her BA in Elementary Education from Michigan State University and she’s held lots of positions in education and business throughout her career. At Career Quest, she teaches business fundamentals, business communication, introduction to computers, college concepts, Microsoft applications, and a whole lot more. Jenny knows that many of her students have never worked in a professional environment so they often don’t know the kind of behaviors expected of them. Teaching students all about the “soft skills” employers really want is an important part of what Jenny does. So is helping them through rough times.
“I remember one student who really thought she couldn’t do it, thought she wouldn’t get through the program or get a job,” says Jenny. “I helped her believe she could. Now she’s working in a job and already looking for advancement.”
Jenny loves being able to help students reach their potential and she loves her job.
“I absolutely adore my coworkers,” says Jenny. “From the time I started, I could ask anyone a question and they’d help me find the answer. We’re a team.”
According to Jenny, Career Quest Learning Centers is success-driven and not just for the students. She says the school really cares about students, instructors, and staff.
“I did a lot of research on Career Quest before I came to work here and I know I made the right choice,” says Jenny. “I hope to retire from Career Quest someday.”
Someday, far in the future, her students hope.
