McLaren Breaks Ground on New Hospital Facility

breaking ground on a new hospital facility

McLaren Health Systems recently began construction on a new $450 million medical complex at University Corporate Research Park, between Collins Road and U.S. 127. Being built in partnership with Michigan State University, the facilities will include a 250-bed acute care hospital, a cancer center, and a medical services building.

According to McLaren CEO of Greater Lansing, Tom Mee, it will be “the safest, most efficient health care campus in the world.” The nine-story facility will include 18 operating rooms, a cancer center, an outpatient facility with a medical office building, and additional space for education and research. According to an MSU press release, “this new facility will help us recruit top physicians and researchers to our region by giving them the best tools, data, and settings possible to develop new life-changing therapies and treatments.”1

The new complex replaces two older local facilities, McLaren Greater Lansing and McLaren Orthopedic Hospital, and consolidates their services into one facility. The future of the older hospitals is uncertain, but they could be repurposed into other health care settings under new ownership to bring even more medical facilities to the area.

While construction is well underway on what will be the hospital’s acute care center, the design and construction for the cancer center and medical office buildings will begin later this year. McLaren’s South Lansing campus will take three years to complete and is scheduled to fully open in early 2022.

The new hospital will bring world-class healthcare to the greater Lansing region and further the research of the renowned Karmanos Cancer Institute, which could lead to groundbreaking developments in the fight against cancer through increased research and clinical trials.

With this exciting growth will also come great opportunity for current and future Career Quest Learning Centers students. The highly-anticipated hospital facility will add even more demand to the area’s already thriving healthcare industry by adding more than 75 new jobs to its existing workforce of over 2,000 McLaren employees in Greater Lansing. Along with doctors and nurses, these new employment opportunities will include entry-level and intermediate full- and part-time positions such as Medical Assistants and Certified Nurse Aides.
