Troubleshoot Problem Areas
If a program keeps crashing or a network is faulty, it will be your responsibility to see what keeps going wrong. You’ll need a solid understanding of operating systems, databases, and computer forensics so you can identify the source of the issue, how best to approach it, and take steps to repair or upgrade it.
Install and Update Software
When your organization hires new staff, they may ask you to install security networks, enterprise products, cloud infrastructure, and office suites. You’ll have to know how to do this on all devices, desktop and mobile. Knowledge of local area network (LAN) administration will be useful here. A LAN is a small network of computers in a pretty close geographic area. Expect to provide helpdesk support in person, or via phone or live chat, so brush up on those communication skills.
Perform System Checks
You won’t just respond to helpdesk calls and ticket requests. You and other IT staff may have to plan ways to test your organization’s computer operations and security – remote printers, mobile communication, desktop applications, driver errors, malware and virus checks. You might even be asked to help write internal policy and procedure guides.
Clients and coworkers aren’t the only people you’ll interact with as a desktop support technician. You’ll also deal with third-party vendors. When you need to order new hardware and software, it’s important to be prepared. Know who provides the best products for the most reasonable prices. Make sure the products are up to the latest certifications and standards. And confirm they’re trusted members of the business community; privacy and security are important areas to maintain as more business is done remotely.
A good desktop support technician is up to date on the latest network and systems trends. They can work independently and as part of a team, in a large company or small organization. And they must be friendly, able to build working relationships with clients, coworkers, and supervisors.
