Summer’s almost over and thanks to some new supplies and gear, your kids are ready to go back to school. As their excitement builds for the new academic year, maybe it’s time to listen to what you always tell them: education is important! Is it time to take your own advice and head back to school? A career-focused program could set you on the path to the success you—and your family—deserve.
Going back to school is a big commitment. Before you invest your time and money, here’s what you should consider as you make this major life decision.
What’s Your Passion?
Do some research on the kind of career you might like to enter. There are so many out there! Think about any special skills or interests you might have that could lead to a successful career. Are you a nurturer with an interest in healthcare? You might make a great Medical Assistant. Do you love kids and taking care of them? Then maybe you should pursue a career in child care. Are you computer savvy? Think about IT. Always wanted to work in an office? Maybe your calling is in Business Administration. Choose a path that allows you to use your special skills and strengths and you could build a successful career that you will enjoy.
Can I Afford It?
Many career-focused programs are short-term and affordable. Some components can even be completed online to save you time and the cost of a commute to campus. Online and blended learning programs can also fit more conveniently into your work schedule so you can earn while you learn. No need to take years off to attend school. As you do your research on careers and schools, you’ll also want to look into the financial aid for which you may qualify. You may be eligible for a federal or state loan, a grant or scholarship. Most schools have financial officers who can help you figure out your tuition costs and financial aid options.
Can I Balance School, Work, and Home?
Between your home and work responsibilities, the thought of going back to school might seem like a challenge. But with the right career college, you can find a flexible program that could fit right into your busy schedule. You could take day or night classes through an on-campus or online program. Or, if you want the flexibility of online classes but still want in-person instruction, you can even find a program that provides a balance of both.
You’ll also want to enlist the help of family and friends, if only for support and encouragement. Be proud of what you’re trying to accomplish and don’t be afraid to ask for some assistance with childcare or meals. Let them know when you can’t make a night out, it’s for a good reason. You’ve got homework! The more people on your team, the more likely you will be to succeed.
