Medical Assistant Program
Her confidence was low initially, Heather explains, and she made the initial call to inquire about the health care programs at Career Quest, but then began to doubt whether she could handle going back to school. She found encouragement.
With twins at home, Heather struggled with finding daycare so she had to solve that challenge. It helped to have a goal in mind. Then there was transportation; Heather commutes just under an hour a day round-trip to attend classes in Kalamazoo. But now that graduation is in sight, she says it has all been worthwhile.
“I went from feeling trapped to feeling like I can do so much to help myself and others. I really pushed myself to do well in my classes. I only missed 4 days in the entire program and my grades have really improved too. I realize that I need to study by myself and concentrate to absorb what I need to know.”
As she nears the end of her program, Heather is starting to do mock-interviews and is getting her resume ready for a job search. The career support is part of her program at Career Quest. “I already have some good leads for jobs,” she says.
Heather is open to a variety of jobs and believes her education will give her a solid foundation. She says it was the best decision not to specialize too early. But she also has a new career goal.
“Ideally, I’d like to work in hospice. I guess I just feel called to do that. I want to be the one who is welcoming and who always supports people.”
