Life as a Medical Biller & Coder

Medical billers and coders help keep a medical office running smoothly by quickly transcribing medical information into one universal code, then requesting reimbursement from the patient’s insurance company.

This is a universal position within the healthcare field, meaning experienced professionals can work in doctor’s offices, hospitals, private practices, assisted living facilities, and any other medical setting across the country.

Often, a medical practice will hire one person to do the role of both a medical biller and coder. After all, these careers go together. Let’s take a closer look at life as a medical biller and coder.

A Day in the Life of a Medical Coder

Medical coders are responsible for translating a physician’s report into one universal medical language. Every symptom, diagnosis, and treatment has its own numeric and alphanumeric code. Since there are thousands of different codes, it’s essential to attend medical coder training classes.

Not only are medical coders responsible for knowing these codes, but they’re also responsible for knowing how to enter medical codes into the system. If a patient has a pre-existing condition, for example, this will affect how the code is entered in the system.

Daily Role of a Medical Coder

Each day as a medical coder faces a new set of exciting challenges when it comes to transcribing a physician’s report. Some of the daily responsibilities of a medical coder include:

  • Reading the physician’s exam notes
  • Transcribing notes into the correct medical code
  • Updating patient records
  • Sending transcribed information to the medical biller

A Look at the Role of a Medical Biller

After the physician’s notes are transcribed, this information is sent to the medical biller. During the exam, they may be asked to create an accurate bill for the patient depending on the patient’s copay or previous agreement with their insurance company.

Medical billers inform the patient’s insurance company what services were provided during an exam. This is known as an insurance claim.

A medical billing certification is needed for this role because making these claims can be a multi-step process:

  1. Send the claim to the insurance company.
  2. Create a second bill for the patient.

a.This is done if the insurance company doesn’t cover the full cost of the exam.

  1. Hire a collection agency, as needed, if the bill is unpaid.

At Career Quest, you’ll learn more about billing insurance companies, which includes:

  • Medicare/Medicaid
  • Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BCBS)
  • Preferred Provider Arrangement (PPA)
